“I don’t want to go back to my old life.”
A Man Trying to Start Over, Found Dead in an Alley
On the morning of May 20, 2024, 35-year-old Jamie Scargill was found face down and unresponsive in a narrow alleyway in Huddersfield, England.
He had been released from prison just four days earlier and was sleeping rough on the streets.
He Wanted to Turn His Life Around
Jamie told his community offender manager he did not want to return to Barnsley, where old friends might drag him back into his former lifestyle. Instead, he wanted to resettle in Huddersfield or Dewsbury.
This decision, though understandable, made it harder to find housing for him.
No Shelter, Only an Alley
When Jamie was released, no accommodation had been arranged. An outreach worker met him at the gate, warned him of potent street opiates, and advised caution due to his low drug tolerance.
Jamie
He said he would seek help from local authorities but ended up sleeping rough.
Cause of Death: Multiple Drug Toxicity
Toxicology tests found high levels of methadone and pregabalin — the latter not prescribed — indicating an overdose.
Too Little, Too Late
He had been sentenced to three months in Leeds prison for theft and had a known history of substance misuse. Though he participated in rehab programs, the short sentence gave little time for re-entry planning.
On May 16, 2024, Jamie was officially released. No shelter, no homecoming, no one could stop that final overdose.
What’s Your Take?
Some people walk out of prison, but never make it back to life. Jamie wasn’t a bad man — he just had nowhere to go.
What would you say to Jamie on the day of his release?
