約翰洛克寫作競賽（John Locke Essay Competition）從極富趣味性和挑戰力的寫作題目出發，旨在培養參賽者的議論文寫作能力，考察參賽者對于不同學科領域獨立深刻的見解、廣博的認知、清晰的說理能力、批判性地分析思維能力和說服力。鼓勵年輕人培養將好學生變成偉大作家的特質：獨立思考、知識深度、推理清晰、批判性分析和說服力。征文比賽邀請學生探索學校課程范圍之外的各種具有挑戰性和有趣的問題。

參加John Locke寫作競賽可以積累知識，提高論證技巧。評委們將從七個學科類別中的每一個類別中選出他們最喜歡的文章，以及一個適合15歲以下兒童的低年級組別，還會從哲學、政治、經濟學、歷史、心理學、神學和法律這七個學科中選出一篇“最佳論文”。此前參賽者被牛津、劍橋、普林斯頓、哈佛、耶魯、斯坦福、芝加哥、加州伯克利等名校錄取。

一篇好的議論文應該遵循這樣的結構：
