Social media users have exposed listings on several e-commerce platforms selling "baby high heels" — miniature footwear that echoes the controversial "three-inch golden lotus" shoes once used in the practice of foot binding. Many netizens have voiced concerns about distorted beauty standards and the adultification of children.
Product listings show tiny shoes with exaggerated heels. One image features a pair of plump baby feet wearing the heels, with a caption that reads, "A 1-year-old's first pair of high heels."

One listing, priced at 23.9 yuan, describes the product as "baby socks, soft high heels for photo props", and offers seven styles including leopard print and metallic colors. Targeted at infants aged 0–6 months, the listing claims over 800 units have been sold.

Another platform labels similar products as "funny photo props for babies". A seller told reporters the items are purely decorative and made of soft cotton fabric, with no practical function.
However, concerns extend beyond just footwear. The growing trend of "sexy baby" fashion — which includes revealing outfits like bikinis, crop tops, and miniskirts, often marketed with terms like "sexy" or "hot" has repeatedly gone viral, raising alarms among experts and parents alike.
Psychologists and legal experts warn that forcing adult aesthetics on children may lead to both psychological harm and legal issues.
Xu Yun, associate professor of psychology at Chengdu Medical College, notes that dressing children in adult-like styles often reflects parental preferences rather than the child's needs. She warns that such practices can disrupt children's development, influencing their sense of self-worth and distorting their value systems.
Legal expert He Haiyan adds that marketing children with adult aesthetics not only risks exposing them to inappropriate social attention but may also contribute to harmful underground industries. She stresses that while parents have the right to decide how their children dress, using adult-style clothing to attract online traffic could be seen as an abuse of guardianship.
Experts agree that truly respecting a child's development means avoiding the imposition of adult values or aesthetics. Parenting should focus on supporting the child's well-being rather than seeking attention through exploitation or satisfying adult desires.
