The dance drama Long Zhou (Dragon Boat) is rooted in China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage, pioneering the transformation of millennia-old dragon boat racing traditions into a theatrical art form. Over three years, the creative team immersed themselves in Shunde, Guangdong—the cultural epicenter of dragon boat culture—to meticulously document core elements such as mortise-and-tenon craftsmanship (structural techniques for boat building), rower training protocols, and dragon boat chants. Their fieldwork spanned over 30 cultural sites, including dragon boat museums, associations, and training facilities, systematically preserving and reinterpreting these living traditions for contemporary audiences.
Set against the backdrop of the International Dragon Boat Championship, the dance drama Long Zhou (Dragon Boat) follows Coach Li Jianjian, a female protagonist who steps up to assemble a national team amid challenges. The narrative traces the journey of young athletes from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and across China, evolving from technical coordination to cultural unity, ultimately embodying the spirit of “rowing as one crew” to win glory for their nation.
The Macau premiere of Long Zhou holds special significance—as a co-host city for the 15th National Games, Macau is embracing the "National Games for All" ethos through multidimensional cultural engagement. This dance drama interprets the Greater Bay Area’s spirit of “Unity in Shared Waters”through art, sounding a cultural prelude to the upcoming national sporting spectacle. For the first time jointly hosted by all 15 cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, the Games transcend athletic competition to embody the region’s collaborative vision of “One Heart, One Force.” By harnessing culture as a bond and the National Games as a stage, the event aims to forge a new chapter of “solidarity and collaboration” for the Bay Area.
