“分詞”英語(yǔ)是Participle，來(lái)自拉丁語(yǔ)Participium，系pars-capere的合成，pars是部分的意思（來(lái)自英語(yǔ)的Part），capere是“拿”“取”的意思（來(lái)自英語(yǔ)的ac-cept、oc-cupy），是說(shuō)“分詞（從動(dòng)詞、名詞身上）各拿了一部分”。比方說(shuō)英語(yǔ)的分詞，區(qū)分時(shí)態(tài)（“現(xiàn)在”分詞、“過(guò)去”分詞），還能接賓語(yǔ)（He's stealing money），這些是動(dòng)詞的特性；可是分詞又可以直接修飾名詞（a laughing man），也可以做系動(dòng)詞的補(bǔ)語(yǔ)（a man is kissed），這是形容詞（廣義名詞）的特性。

從另一方面講，分詞的動(dòng)詞性和名詞性都不全，例如英語(yǔ)分詞不分語(yǔ)氣（*直言分詞、*虛擬分詞、*命令分詞），也沒有數(shù)（*單數(shù)分詞、*複數(shù)分詞——當(dāng)然英語(yǔ)形容詞本來(lái)就不變格）。
