Ten men broke out of a New Orleans jail Friday in an audacious overnight escape by fleeing through a hole behind a toilet and scaling a wall while the lone guard assigned to their cell pod was away getting food, authorities said.

Seven of the escapees, including suspects charged with murder, remain on the lam following the breakout.

報道指出，警方公布的所謂逃跑路線照片顯示，一間牢房的金屬馬桶被推到一邊，露出了一個洞口。洞口上方還留有涂鴉，例如“太容易了，笑死”和“有機會再來抓我們”。

Photos of the purported escape route released by the sheriff's office show a jail cell with a metal toilet pushed to the side, exposing a precut hole. Above it, the escapees allegedly wrote various messages such as "To easy lol" and "Catch us when you can".

警方：逃犯或得到內部人員協助

當地警方表示，16日凌晨00:23左右，越獄者開始破壞一間牢房的門，負責看守的一名工作人員因外出取餐并未發現。

隨后，他們進入了這間牢房，1:01分通過牢房內廁所后邊的墻洞逃出。此后，他們又翻越圍墻并穿過州際公路。

At 12:23 am the escapees started tampering with a locked cell door and ultimately broke it open, unobserved by a civilian employee who had left to get food, according to the sheriff's office.

At 1:01 am, the inmates exited the jail via a door at the docks, through which supplies are brought into the facility, scaled a jail wall using blankets to protect themselves from razor wire and ran across nine lanes of Interstate 10.

當地警長稱，“如果沒有外界的幫助，任何人想要逃離這個設施幾乎是不可能的。”警方認為，逃犯可能得到了獄方內部人員的協助。

據美媒報道，警方承認“安保漏洞”是導致越獄事件發生的原因之一。盡管獄方在前一天晚上10:30就封鎖了監獄，但由于門鎖存在缺陷，囚犯仍然能夠逃出牢房。

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said there are indications that people inside her department helped the fugitives escape.

"It's almost impossible, not completely, but almost impossible for anybody to get out of this facility without help," she said of the jail, where 1,400 people are being held.

The sheriff's office acknowledged "lapses in security" contributed to the escape. Although deputies put the jail on lockdown at 10:30 pm the night before, inmates were able to exit their cells because of defective locks and doors, the sheriff's office said.

The absence of the 10 men, who also utilized facility deficiencies that officials have long complained about in their escape, went unnoticed for hours. It was not until a routine morning headcount, more than seven hours later, that law enforcement learned of the escape.

逃犯的年齡從19歲到42歲不等，部分人面臨謀殺指控。警方呼吁公眾保持警惕，并稱“全面搜查行動”正在開展中。
