Shadow puppetry, a traditional Chinese folk art with a long history, uses cutouts made from animal hide or cardboard to tell stories through light and shadow. During a performance, artists stand behind a white curtain, skillfully manipulating the shadow puppets while narrating the story in local dialects and singing, accompanied by percussion and string instruments. The performances are rich in local flavor and charm.
It is widely believed that shadow puppetry originated in Shaanxi and later spread across China. While styles vary in terms of vocal performance and repertoire, the techniques for crafting puppets and staging plays are largely similar. Each region has its own lyrical characteristics, which shape the content and tone of the performances.
As a highly integrated and unique form of folk art, shadow puppetry carries thousands of years of cultural heritage. Due to the rapid development of modern society, the influx of diverse cultural elements, and changing entertainment habits, many shadow puppetry faces the risk of extinction and urgently require preservation.
