Interpreting this member club hidden in the heart of Washington, DC from an artistic perspective is like opening a three-dimensional architectural history book. Stonehill Taylor and Soho House Design used the golden age of the 1920s as a pen to write a counterpoint between retro aesthetics and contemporary functionality in the historical shells of Riggs Bank and Security Bank of America. When members walked through the historic lobby of the Walker Building and the elevator rose to the 9th floor, the geometric edge of Art Deco and the carved columns of neoclassicism completed a century-old dialogue at the door frame - the architectural team retained the different facades of the two buildings, but used metal corridors to construct a visual narrative of "time and space folding", allowing the copper waistline of Art Deco and the texture of neoclassical stone to interpret each other in light and shadow.
The design of the library contains the code of political aesthetics: the retro mantel and the striped wall coverings of the White House during the Obama era echo the times, the oak desk in the daytime will be blurred by the bar lamp at dusk to become a social space, and the folds of the leather armchair seem to be precipitated with the whispers of a century of financial history. The Kennedy-era murals and custom mosaic floors in the living room next door form a symphony of colors. In the collision of bright yellow and indigo, the brushstrokes of Sister Parish style are engaging in a cross-time and space dialogue with De Stijl geometric patterns. This translation of historical scenes is not a simple reproduction, but a disassembly of the solemnity of the East Wing of the White House into a touchable design language - just like the framed view of the Washington Monument in the restaurant lounge, the crackling of the fireplace and the stage jazz together weave the emotional map of urban social interaction.
The de Gournay hand-painted wallpaper at the entrance is a visual prelude: the soft pink of cherry blossom is interwoven with the cool gray of the stone of the Walker Building. The geometric hollowing of the metal door allows the sun to cast changing spots of light on the mosaic floor. In terms of touch, the warmth of the brass handles and the coolness of the marble steps form a sensory contrast. Founders Restaurant is the pinnacle of material poetics: the stained-glass window lattices filter the outline of the White House dome into colorful spots of light, the caramel tone of the wooden wainscoting forms a warm tone with the same carpet as the Kennedy Family Dining Room, and the glass ceiling that imitates the White House sunroom makes natural light the most luxurious decorative material at noon.
The greenhouse space plays out a hazy narrative of indoor and outdoor: vines cling to metal frames, rattan furniture and floral cushions bring the natural atmosphere of the Potomac River into the interior, and the glass curtain wall eliminates the boundary between architecture and garden. The stone mosaic floor of the rooftop bar hides the metaphor of star maps. When dusk permeates the Washington skyline, the silhouette of the monument and the warm light of the bar form the double voice of the city nocturne. This introduction of nature is not a blunt implantation, but a continuation of the texture of the material - such as the echo of the texture of the outdoor stone and the indoor floor tiles, allowing members to feel the philosophy of "architecture is an extension of nature" as they move from one scene to another.
From the vaults of the historic bank to the streamlines of the contemporary social space, the design team used “archaeological precision and poetic imagination” to make every detail a narrative node. The preserved original lobby columns and newly created metal installations are like the DNA double helix that twists the past and the present into the design. On the skeleton of functionalism, a spatial texture full of human warmth grows - this may be the most moving metaphor of The Ned’s Club: true luxury is to let history continue to breathe in contemporary life.
