據《文匯報》報道，國際天文學聯合會小天體命名工作組（WGSBN）發布的官方公告中顯示，6月9日，經國際天文學聯合會小天體命名工作組批準，由國際上最多產的小行星獵手之一楊光宇發現的編號第34815號小行星被正式命名為“王菲星”。

The name of Asia pop diva Faye Wong has been adopted for an asteroid as the International Astronomical Union's Working Group on Small Body Nomenclature (WGSBN) announced that asteroid No 34815 will be called "Faye Wong Star".

According to the official announcement released by the WGSBN, asteroid No 34815 was discovered on Sept 20, 2001, by William Yeung Kwong-yu, one of the world's most prolific asteroid hunters.

公告上的命名理由顯示，王菲是華語樂壇傳奇歌手、詞曲創作者及演員，作為標志性音樂人，她以空靈嗓音和獨特藝術理念跨越文化邊界，啟發了無數樂迷。在西方觀眾心中，她最為人熟知的角色是在王家衛執導的電影《重慶森林》與《2046》中的精彩演出。

The naming rationale stated in the announcement notes that Faye Wong is a Chinese singer-songwriter and actress. As an iconic singer, her unique voice and artistic vision have transcended boundaries, inspiring millions. In the West she is perhaps best known for starring in Wong Kar-wai's films

王菲星是香港天文學會前會長楊光宇在2001年9月20日發現的，除了以自己親人好友的名字來命名小行星，楊光宇還常用演藝界人物的名字，如林青霞、鄧麗君、劉德華、張國榮、李安等。此外，楊光宇還曾將兩顆小行星命名為“李白”和“杜甫”。

According to media reports, in addition to naming asteroids after his own family and friends, Yeung often selects names of prominent figures from the entertainment industry, such as Brigitte Lin, Teresa Teng, Andy Lau, Leslie Cheung, and Ang Lee. He has also named two asteroids after the renowned ancient Chinese poets Li Bai and Du Fu.

楊光宇是國際上最多產的小行星獵手之一，據不完全統計，他發現的獲得永久編號的小行星已達2000多顆，也具有這些小行星的命名權。他曾在公開報道中表示，給小行星命名的意義在于寄托個人的心意。

As one of the world's most prolific asteroid hunter, Yeung has discovered over 2,000 asteroids that have been granted permanent designations, each of which he has the right to name. In previous interviews, he described asteroid naming as "a way to carry sentiment into the sky".

曾多次參與中國天文史料整理和發掘工作的天文愛好者林景明特別說明，小行星命名沒有任何獎金和獎狀，且其命名權是不可轉讓和買賣的。

一直以來，網絡上有商家打著“買賣小行星命名權”的旗號行招搖撞騙之舉，但這類服務并未得到國際天文學聯合會小天體命名工作組的權威認證。
