The 8th day of the sixth lunar month marks the birthday of Li Longwang, commonly known as “Tūwěiba Lǎo Lǐ”. He is a figure in folk mythology popular in Wendeng, Weihai, and his legends have been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage.
According to the legend, during the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty, a peasant woman surnamed Guo, wife of a Li family in Songcun Town, Wendeng, became pregnant for three years after drinking river water and gave birth to a black dragon. Mistaking the newborn for a monster, the father chopped off its tail with a sickle. The black dragon, in great pain, fled and thus earned the name “Bald-Tail Old Li.“ Later, after achieving success in Taoist practices, he was conferred the title of “Chief Dragon King“ by the emperor, in charge of rivers, lakes, and seas, with a special responsibility for water management.
Subsequently, Li Longwang traveled to the northeast to subdue a white flood dragon that was causing chaos in the Bailong River (White Dragon River). Following his instructions in their dreams, the people threw lime to harm the white flood dragon and steamed buns to aid the black dragon, who eventually won the battle. As a result, the Bailong River was renamed the “Heilong River“ (Black Dragon River).
Li Longwang was extremely filial. He had his mother reburied on Changyang Mountain and manifested his spirit there, leading to the mountain being renamed “Huilong Mountain“ (Dragon-Returning Mountain). Every year on the 2nd day of the third lunar month, the birthday of the Dragon Mother, a mountain festival is held with steamed buns offered as sacrifices, a tradition that continues to this day.(來源:海報新聞)
