黃光瓷螺 Melanella luminosa 于 1997 年在新西蘭被發(fā)現(xiàn)。它是瓷螺科唯一已知的發(fā)光物種，也是腹足綱中第一個被發(fā)現(xiàn)發(fā)黃光的物種。黃光瓷螺寄生于紅色海參 Squamocnus brevidentis 體表，生活于新西蘭南地的南部峽灣和查塔姆群島，水深 10~238 米?；铙w采集于 15~18 米深處。其正模標(biāo)本僅有 5.73 毫米長，但由于其身體的最后一圈會透過半透明殼體持續(xù)發(fā)出檸檬黃色光芒，所以很容易被看到。
黃光瓷螺的光來自細(xì)胞內(nèi)，沒有特別的發(fā)光點(diǎn)，在酒精標(biāo)本中呈白色。其種加詞 luminosa 來源于拉丁語，意為“充滿光”。
