"Da Tie Hua" (striking molten iron into sparks) is a folk performance art discovered by ancient Chinese blacksmiths during the casting process. It is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. Originating in the Northern Song Dynasty and flourishing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Da Tie Hua has a history of over a thousand years. It is mainly found in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, especially popular in Henan and Shanxi provinces. The Kaifeng version of Da Tie Hua is considered the top folk art of the Yellow River region.
For the performance, a six-meter-tall double-layered frame is built in an open space. Fresh willow branches densely cover the upper frame, decorated with fireworks, firecrackers, and ignition materials. A six-meter-tall wooden pole is placed in the center, bringing the total height to over ten meters. A furnace is set up nearby to melt iron. During the performance, the performer uses a rod to strike the molten iron, heated to over a thousand degrees Celsius, toward the frame, producing dazzling showers of sparks that shoot over ten meters high. These iron sparks ignite the fireworks and firecrackers attached to the structure, and when combined with the "dragon through the flowers" act, the entire scene becomes a grand spectacle, full of thrill, festivity, and excitement.
