桑德斯此前曾擔任丹佛掘金隊的助理教練。在此之前，他曾擔任明尼蘇達森林狼隊的主教練。他在森林狼擔任了3個賽季（2018-19賽季起，2020-21賽季止）的主帥，戰績為43勝94負，勝率31.4%。
