At the top of a rocky peak 500 meters above sea level in Valmorin, Quebec, Canada, Atelier Schwimmer Architecture built a modern wooden house for the Blouins that coexists with pine forests and rocks - the "Owl Shield House". This holiday house hidden in the Laurentian Valley resists the hustle and bustle of the outside world with the cold outline of weathering steel, embraces nature with the warm texture of white cedar, and writes the mountain living philosophy of "shelter, durability and dialogue between time and space" in the minimalist architectural vocabulary.
The cabin responds to the steepness of the mountain with a "shield-shaped" plane: the main building is a right-angled trapezoid, with the acute end pointing to the top of the mountain and the obtuse end embedded in the slope, forming a stable posture of "wedging into the rock". The cantilevered roof protrudes 6 meters like an eagle spreading its wings. Its sharp broken line contour not only echoes the glacial erosion landform in the distance, but also provides sunshade for the south-facing glass curtain wall. In winter, it can guide the snow to slide down to avoid excessive roof load.
The north-facing facade is a fully enclosed weathering steel curtain wall with a thickness of 8 mm. The surface is not polished, and the rough rust forms a color conspiracy with the bedrock of the mountain, just like a metal armor growing out of the rock; the south-facing facade embraces the panoramic view of the valley with a whole frameless glass wall. The glass uses three layers of Low-E coating, which not only blocks ultraviolet rays but also frames the changing seasons of the Laurentian Valley into a dynamic picture. This "real north and virtual south" facade strategy not only meets the needs of privacy protection and climate defense, but also realizes the psychological metaphor of "blocking the hustle and bustle and embracing nature."
The facade is made of Corten-A weathering steel. Under the erosion of mountain wind, rain and snow, a dense rust layer gradually forms on the steel plate. The color changes from reddish orange to dark brown when it is first installed, and finally achieves a unified color with the surrounding hemlock trunks and shale rock formations. The joints of the steel components adopt the "interlaced" welding process, and the welding scars and grinding marks are deliberately retained, just like the natural cracks in the rock, strengthening the design concept of "artificial is natural".
The interior ceiling and walls are made of unpainted white cedar boards, which retain natural knots and growth rings. The cut surface is flame-sprayed to form a carbonized layer, which not only enhances corrosion resistance but also gives the surface a matte texture. The floor is made of waxed concrete, which is mixed with local quartz sand during pouring. The sand exposed after grinding is like gravel on the mountain trail. When walking barefoot, you can feel the dual touch of "rough rock" and "warm wood". The kitchen island is made of a whole piece of weathering steel, and the countertop is embedded with an induction cooker and a stainless steel sink. The coldness of the steel forms a dramatic contrast with the heat of cooking.
The 80-square-meter single floor is divided into a "social wing" and a "private wing": the large-span space on the east side integrates the living room, dining room and kitchen, with a ceiling height of 3.5 meters. The exposed weathering steel trusses and white cedar beams form a structural aesthetic of "industrial skeleton + natural skin"; the three bedrooms on the west side adopt a split-level design, with the ground raised 30 centimeters, transitioned by wooden steps, and the ceiling lowered to 2.4 meters, creating a "nesting"-like wrapping feeling. The glass wall of the public area can be completely folded to integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces in summer, and closed in winter to form a warm "viewing cabin".
The building strictly follows the passive house principle: the cantilevered eaves of the south-facing glass wall are precisely calculated according to the solar altitude angle, which can bring in full-day sunlight on the winter solstice and completely block direct sunlight on the summer solstice; the concrete floor slab acts as a thermal mass, absorbing sunlight heat during the day and slowly releasing it at night, so that the indoor temperature difference fluctuation is controlled within 3°C. The north-facing wall uses a 300 mm thick rock wool insulation layer with an airtightness of 0.6ACH@50Pa, which can automatically adjust the indoor humidity and avoid condensation with an intelligent vapor barrier.
The cabin is equipped with an independent water resource circulation system: the artesian well on the top of the mountain provides domestic water, which meets the drinking water standard after being treated by a three-stage filtration device; rainwater is collected through the roof gutter and stored in a 5-ton underground reservoir for irrigation and flushing toilets. Electricity comes from the hydropower energy of the regional power grid, and the overall energy consumption of the building is only 80kWh/(m2?a), which is equivalent to 1/3 of that of an ordinary house.
90% of the original vegetation on the site is preserved, and the building foundation uses micro pile foundations to avoid large-scale excavation and damage to the rock and soil layer. The outdoor trail is paved with weathering steel grids, allowing mosses and lichens to grow in the gaps between the grids. After three years, an ecological path "suspended above the vegetation" will be formed. Metal mesh baskets are set at the edge of the terrace and filled with locally collected gravel to provide a habitat for lizards and insects, realizing the design ideal of "building as ecological node".
The ultimate charm of the Owl Shield Residence is that it transforms the building into a "breathable geological layer" - the rust of the weathering steel is the brushstrokes of time, the texture of the white cedar is the code of nature, and the sand in the concrete is the fragments of the mountain. Here, the edge of design is hidden in the transformation of materials. When the spring snow melts, the water marks on the steel wall and the moss on the rocks draw a map together; when the autumn leaves fall, the fragrance of the white cedar and the coldness of the weathering steel ferment in the air; when the winter night falls, the starlight on the glass curtain wall and the residual heat in the concrete warm the returnees. This cabin proves that the real secluded architecture is not to escape from the island of civilization, but to let civilization, in the most humble manner, become a footnote in the epic of nature again.
