"Life's tribulations become legends in retrospect."
This poignant reflection comes from 1990s-born author Liu Chuxin as he accepted the Fiction Category award at the Lijiang Literary Awards for his novel
Quagmire
Nitan). During an emotionally charged acceptance speech, Liu tearfully shared the story of his late girlfriend, moving many online viewers to tears.
Audience members remarked that what began as a "romantic story" ended as a "heart-wrenching tale", even leaving celebrated author Yu Hua, present at the ceremony, visibly moved.
In the aftermath of the viral video, Liu revealed that sharing his girlfriend's story upon winning had been a long-held wish: "I just wanted the world to remember the most beautiful and kind-hearted person I've ever known." His phone remains filled with her photos.

Despite his joy, Liu voiced a concern: "People are focusing on my personal story, not my work. I worry the book might disappoint when published."
The creation of
Quagmireproved as arduous as its title suggests. Conceived in 2013, the novel took a decade to complete. Liu condensed an initial 500,000-word manuscript to 130,000 words through relentless revisions, wrestling with self-doubt and facing repeated rejections from publishers.
Currently undergoing the final stage of proofreading, the book is set for a summer release. "This decade-long work carries too much," Liu expressed. "I look forward to sharing this story born from the 'quagmire'."
Lijiang Publishing House has confirmed
Quagmireis scheduled for publication in June.
On Thursday, at a literary event in Zhejiang province, Yu Hua reflected on Liu's unexpected narrative twist: "We were all deeply touched." Regarding Liu's years of rejection, Yu expressed admiration: "It shows persistence will eventually pay off."
