根據美國國家科學基金會（NSF）2023年發布的數據，在2017至2019年間獲得美國科學與工程（S&E）博士學位的國際學生中，截至2023年，約有73%仍留在美國工作或從事博士后研究。其中，中國籍博士的短期留美率為83%。
2000–2015年間，在美國獲得STEM博士學位的國際學生，中國學生留美率一直很高，基本都在90%左右，尤其是在2000–2005年之間達到接近或超過90%。
