In the high-density urban texture of Barcelona, HOUSE 1736 reconstructed the narrative of living with a "spatial surgery". The designer retained the street-facing facade for protection, hollowed out the interior into two halves, and used the central atrium as the breathing center - the double-height patios on the ground floor and the first floor are delineated by four columns, and the skylight on the top is like a light funnel, crushing the morning light into spots of light that shine obliquely on the carpet in the living room; the corridor on the second floor is like a suspended ring, allowing the wind to make a subtle whistle when passing through the railings, and rolling the coffee aroma from the kitchen and the laughter from the children's room to the courtyard. This wisdom of "hollowing out" allows the 631㎡ building to grow breathing lungs in the squeeze of the city, just like the primitive worship of light and wind in the traditional Mediterranean courtyard, which is transformed into a spatial declaration of contemporary architecture here.

The skin of the building is a silent poet. The "lean concrete" wall is made of sand and gravel mixed with a low cement ratio. After a rammed earth-like compaction process, it forms a rough texture like rock, and the pores hide the temperature memory of the Mediterranean sun; while the wooden ceiling of the main space is like a floating ark, and the texture of the pine wood presents different shades of warm tones with the changes of light and shadow, forming a tactile and visual duet with the coldness of the concrete. The most exquisite is the "selective hollowing" of the wall - niches are carved out in the heavy structural wall, or used as bookshelves to display old family photos, or embedded in light troughs to let light seep through the cracks in the stone, just like solidifying the wrinkles of time into the details of living. When your fingers touch the particles of the concrete wall, you can feel the architect's respect for the "imperfect" material: they are not modified skins, but breathing life carriers.

建筑的表皮是沉默的詩人。“貧混凝土” 墻體以低水泥配比混合砂石，經夯土般的壓實工藝，形成如巖石般粗糲的肌理，孔隙間藏著地中海陽光的溫度記憶；而主空間的木質天花板則如漂浮的方舟，松木的紋理隨光影變化呈現深淺不一的暖調，與混凝土的冷冽形成觸感與視覺的二重奏。最精妙的是墻體的 “選擇性掏空”—— 厚重的結構墻內鑿出壁龕，或作書架陳列家族老照片，或嵌燈槽讓光線從石縫間滲出，如同將時光的褶皺凝固為居住的細節。當手指撫過混凝土墻面的顆粒，能感受到建筑師對 “不完美” 材質的敬意：它們不是被修飾的表皮，而是會呼吸的生命載體。

The hierarchy of space hides the script of life. The four high and spacious main spaces on each floor are like the protagonists on the stage, and the order is established by orthogonal axes: the living room uses the vertical height of the atrium to form a sense of ceremony, the dining room takes in the street view by the window, and the bedroom is more private because of the wooden ceiling; while the secondary space is like a supporting role, filling the gap in the main space, the small window of the laundry room faces the light and shadow of the corridor, and the low door of the storage room is hidden in the thickness of the wall. This "master-slave relationship" is like a metaphor for family life - the parents' master bedroom is as stable as a pedestal, and the children's room grows on the edge like branches and leaves. The most moving scene is the atrium scene in the afternoon: the sun casts moving spots on the ground through the skylight, the grandmother sits on the sofa and knits a sweater, the light and shadow jump between her silver hair and wool, and the wind blows through the columns, bringing the sound of pages turning. The geometric logic of the building is transformed into a lyric poem of life at this moment.

空間的層級暗藏著生活的劇本。每層四間高敞主空間如舞臺主角，以正交軸線確立秩序：客廳借中庭的垂直高度形成儀式感，餐廳臨窗收納街景，臥室因木質天花板而倍顯私密；而次級空間則如配角，填充在主空間的間隙，洗衣房的小窗對準回廊的光影，儲藏室的矮門藏在墻的厚度里。這種 “主從關系” 恰似家族生活的隱喻 —— 父母的主臥如基座般穩固，孩子的房間如枝葉般在邊緣生長。最動人的是午后的中庭場景：陽光透過天窗在地面投下移動的光斑，祖母坐在沙發上織毛衣，光影在她銀發與毛線間跳躍，風穿過立柱時帶起書頁翻動的聲響，建筑的幾何邏輯在此刻化為生活的抒情詩。

The designer decoded the genes of Barcelona's Gothic courtyard into a contemporary language. The verticality of the atrium continues the sacredness of the medieval patio, while the enclosure of the cloister reminds people of the tranquility of the monastery; but the intervention of technology has given tradition a new lease of life - the principle of thermal pressure ventilation allows the hot air to automatically rise and discharge in summer through the "chimney effect" of the atrium, and the thermal inertia of the thick walls to maintain room temperature in winter. This respect for the climate is in line with the wisdom of the Mediterranean residents who have been "borrowing from nature" for thousands of years. When night falls, the skylight turns into a picture frame of the starry sky, and the lights of the cloister cast the shadows of the columns on the ground. The building seems to be telling a story about the overlap of time: the rammed earth technology of ancient Rome, the vertical aesthetics of the Gothic, and the functional rationality of modernism are melted into an urban dwelling belonging to the 21st century at this moment.

The collaboration between the HARQUITECTES team and structural engineer DSM arquitectes made the seemingly contradictory design a reality: the thick concrete walls serve as both the structure and the insulation layer, and the four atrium columns release the spaciousness of the central space with precise mechanical calculations; the M7 Enginyers equipment design is hidden in the gaps in the wall, and the air-conditioning vents are integrated with the niches. Photographer Adrià Goula captured this moment: the morning light penetrates the pores in the concrete wall, casting mottled light spots on the wooden floor, and the roughness of the structure and the delicacy of the light are reconciled here - this is not only a victory for architecture, but also a proof that the team has made technology succumb to poetry.

This house eventually becomes a natural container in the city: it gives shape to light, a path to wind, and memory to materials. When a family of five shares dinner in the light and shadow of the atrium, and when rain falls into the pool through the glass of the skylight, the building is no longer a cold geometric body, but a living body that carries emotions - this may be the designer's ultimate interpretation of "urban housing": in the jungle of steel and concrete, plant a piece of breathing light for life.

這座房子最終成為城市中的自然容器：它讓光有了形狀，讓風有了路徑，讓材質有了記憶。當五口之家在中庭的光影里共享晚餐，當雨水順著天窗的玻璃墜入水池，建筑不再是冰冷的幾何體，而成為承載情感的生命體 —— 這或許就是設計師對 “城市住宅” 的終極詮釋：在鋼筋水泥的叢林里，為生活種一片會呼吸的光。
