辛棄疾閑居江西上饒帶湖時期創作了很多經典的作品，有一些詞不僅抒情，還表達出了作者對于人生的感慨。這其實是和辛棄疾的生活有著密切的關系，由于一直被人打壓排擠，于是不得不選擇前往帶湖隱居，說到底是被逼無奈。辛棄疾所處的時代是南宋，當時北方被金國所占領，少年時代就立志要收復河山，于是在故鄉（山東濟南）參加了當地的起義，后來逐步從一個士兵成長為將軍。

南宋當時的都城是臨安（浙江杭州），辛棄疾為了可以實現自己的人生理想，從北方偷偷地前往南方，剛開始的時候還一度受到重用，可是后期由于南宋朝廷，并沒有想過要收復北方的失地，以為憑借長江天險，便可以高枕無憂，這時作為主戰派的辛棄疾受到了打壓，從前線召回被罷免了官職，正是在這樣的歷史背景之下，辛棄疾選擇了隱居。

上饒位于江西東北部，緊鄰浙江風景秀麗，辛棄疾恰好看中了帶湖的自然風光，還在那里建造了別墅，看似過著悠然自得的生活，可是對于一位有理想，有著遠大志向的人來說，這樣的一種生活，并不是他所追求的，為此那一時期的辛棄疾所創作的作品，大多充滿了憂愁，以這首《鷓鴣天·博山寺作》來說，通篇不僅抒情，同時還諷刺了那個時代。

博山距離辛棄疾所居住的帶湖不遠，山上景色如詩如畫，還有一座寺廟，每當前往此地游玩時，一定會在山上的寺廟居住一段時間；所以辛棄疾為博山創作過很多的詞，這首就是其中一首比較有代表性的作品，全詞通過生活的感慨來描寫，從而使得這首詞每一句都有深意，為此讀這樣的作品，還是要了解作者的生平，只有這樣才能夠真正理解其中的意思。
上片先是交代了隱居之后的生活，看似淡淡著筆，好像顯得很隨意，可是從中卻最能夠感受到詞人的無奈，還有對于現實的感慨。我不用再往帝都的路上奔波，畢竟我已經隱居在此地，每天過著悠然自得的生活。然而由于多次往返于山寺之間，它可能早已開始討厭我。如今我是在有味和無味之間追求生活的樂趣，在材與不材之間度過這一生，沒有了任何的追求。
辛棄疾在隱居之后一度心灰意冷，畢竟在現實的生活中，始終是郁郁不得志，被人打壓排擠，雖然辛棄疾說自己是在有味無味中追求生活的樂趣，無非只是自嘲而已，明明很有才華，可是卻沒有機會，這對于任何一個人來說，那都是致命的打擊，為此辛棄疾感慨萬千，從而使得整個上片，有著一種淡淡的憂傷，讀后讓人肝腸寸斷。
下片是著重于闡述個人對于生活的態度，這同樣是一種無奈之舉，由于在生活中無法實現人生理想，那么我就永遠保持獨立的人格，不再趨炎附勢貪圖名利，只做最真實的自己。走遍人間，已經是白發蒼蒼，老的不成樣子，可最終還是要回歸到鄉野，猶如老農一樣去辛勤勞作。這個時候松樹和竹子是我的朋友，花兒和鳥兒是我的兄弟。
辛棄疾不為名利而活，可以說是活得很通透，只是唯一的遺憾，沒有機會去到前線的戰場建功立業，從而成為了他一生中最大的遺憾。這首《鷓鴣天·博山寺作》節奏明快，寫出了一種豁達的人生態度，那就是告誡了世人，生活在這個人世間，最重要的是獨立的人格，還有對于生活的態度，以及對于理想的追求。
